But when is the best time to book a charter for the best action? As Captain Cody Cash Moody of My Fishing Adventure Charters, I’ll break it down by season so you can plan your perfect trip.

Spring (March – May): The Peak of Inshore Action

Spring is one of the best times to fish in St. Marks. As the waters warm up, fish become more active and move into the shallows, making them easier to target.

What’s Biting?
• Redfish – Found tailing in the grass flats and cruising the oyster bars.
• Speckled Trout – Active over seagrass beds and around drop-offs.
• Spanish Mackerel – Start migrating through, offering exciting action.
• Flounder – Moving into the area, great for light tackle anglers.

Why Spring?
• The weather is comfortable, with mild temperatures and light winds.
• Baitfish become abundant, bringing in hungry gamefish.
• Less boat traffic compared to summer.

Summer (June – August): Early Mornings & Late Evenings are Key

Summertime in St. Marks brings long, hot days, but that doesn’t mean the fishing slows down. The key is to fish during cooler parts of the day—early morning or late evening—when the fish are most active.

What’s Biting?
• Redfish & Trout – Still plentiful but more active at dawn and dusk.
• Tarpon – The Silver Kings arrive, making summer a great time for fly anglers.
• Sharks – Blacktips and spinners provide thrilling fights.

Why Summer?
• Calm waters make for smooth rides to the best fishing spots.
• Perfect for families and vacationers looking for a summer adventure.
• A great time for topwater action at sunrise.

Fall (September – November): The Redfish Run

Fall is arguably the best time to fish in St. Marks. As water temperatures cool, fish start feeding aggressively to prepare for winter.

What’s Biting?
• Bull Redfish – Large schools gather in the flats and around oyster bars.
• Speckled Trout – Big trout move into shallow waters.
• Flounder – Peak season for catching doormats near structure.
• Black Drum & Sheepshead – Found near docks and rocky areas.

Why Fall?
• Cooler temperatures make for comfortable full-day trips.
• Less fishing pressure, meaning more productive days.
• The best chance for sight fishing massive redfish in skinny water.

Winter (December – February): A Hidden Gem for Serious Anglers

Winter may not be the most popular time to fish, but it offers excellent opportunities for those willing to brave cooler mornings. The fish concentrate in deeper channels, making them easier to locate.

What’s Biting?
• Redfish – Stacked up in deeper creeks and holes.
• Speckled Trout – Moves into rivers and deeper water.
• Black Drum & Sheepshead – Perfect targets for light tackle anglers.

Why Winter?
• Crystal-clear waters make for excellent sight fishing.
• Less competition on the water.
• A great time to target fish with artificial lures and fly gear.

When Should You Book Your Inshore Charter?

The best time to book a trip depends on your target species and fishing style. If you’re after trophy redfish, plan for fall. If you love topwater action, summer mornings are unbeatable. Whether you’re after redfish, speckled trout, or even tarpon, choosing the right fly can make all the difference. Here’s a breakdown of the best flies to use for different species and conditions in Apalachicola Bay and its surrounding waters.

Top Flies for Apalachicola Bay Fishing

1. Redfish – Go-To Flies

Redfish are one of the most sought-after species in the Apalachicola area, and they love a well-placed fly.
    • Kwan Fly – This versatile pattern mimics shrimp and small baitfish, making it a staple for redfish.
    • Crab Patterns (Merkin, EP Crab) – Redfish feed heavily on crabs in the bay’s grassy flats, making these flies deadly.
    • Shrimp Imitations (EP Shrimp, Clouser Shrimp) – A slow, natural presentation along the bottom is key to enticing a strike.

2. Speckled Trout – Best Flies for Success

Speckled trout are aggressive feeders, often striking flashy or erratic flies.
    • Clouser Minnow – A must-have fly, with chartreuse and white being the top-producing colors.
    • Deceiver Fly – Mimics a wounded baitfish, great for targeting larger trout in deeper channels.
    • Gurgler (Topwater Fly) – If trout are feeding on the surface, a gurgler creates irresistible surface action.

3. Tarpon – The Ultimate Challenge

When tarpon are migrating through Apalachicola’s waters, a well-presented fly can lead to an unforgettable battle.
    • Black Death Fly – A favorite for tarpon, especially in stained water.
    • Cockroach Fly – A time-tested pattern that mimics baitfish and consistently attracts bites.
    • EP Baitfish – When tarpon are keyed in on larger bait, this pattern is a go-to choice.

4. Jack Crevalle – Hard-Hitting Action

Jacks are aggressive predators that will smash a fast-moving fly.
    • Popper Flies – The louder, the better! Jacks love chasing big surface flies.
    • Baitfish Patterns (Deceiver, EP Mullet) – Fast strips will trigger aggressive strikes.

5. Tripletail – A Unique Challenge

Tripletail are often found near floating debris or buoys, and they’ll readily take a well-presented fly.
    • Shrimp Patterns (Gotcha, EP Shrimp) – A slow presentation near structure is key.
    • Small Baitfish Flies – When they’re feeding on small baitfish, an unweighted streamer works well.

Fly Fishing Tips for Apalachicola Waters
    • Tides Matter – Fish are more active on moving tides, so plan accordingly.
    • Match the Hatch – Pay attention to what baitfish and crustaceans are present.
    • Use Stealth – Apalachicola’s shallow waters require quiet approaches for wary fish.
    • Leader Selection – Clear water calls for fluorocarbon leaders, while stained water allows for heavier setups.

Book Your Apalachicola Fly Fishing Adventure

Want to put these fly patterns to the test? Mexico beach, Port St Joe & Cape Sand Blast and St Joe Bays has been absolutely a pleasure to pole and chase monster trout. Closer to home in Apalachicola, St George Island & Carrabelle. The sight fishing has been off the charts with visibility and water quality better then it been in years. Schools of redfish have been on all the flats on the right tides. It takes a skilled cast and can be rather challenging to a beginner but the rewards are truly worth it.
